2016 Champion - Nathaniel Goddard of Ptarmigan CC

After coming up short -- but so close -- to titles in the two major CGA championships last year, Nathaniel Goddard was determined not to let another opportunity slip through his fingers this week.

The now-22-year-old from Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins lost 1 down to eventual champion Nick Nosewicz in the semifinals of the 2015 CGA Match Play, then held a four-stroke lead after 54 holes of the 2015 CGA Stroke Play only to finish second.

But on Friday, in the 116th CGA Match Play, the former Colorado Christian University golfer closed the deal by claiming the title at Lone Tree Golf Club. He played the last four holes in 2 under par to edge Josh Seiple of Castle Pines Golf Club 1 up and earn the trophy in the state's oldest championship.

2016 Champion - Colin Prater of The Broadmoor Golf Club

Colin Prater of The Broadmoor Golf Club had many notable accomplishments in golf prior to the last couple of weeks -- including five college wins and advancing to U.S. Open Sectionals last year -- but it's fair to say he's climbed the next rung on the ladder in the last 14 days.

On July 25 at Columbine Country Club, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs golfer took the first big step up by qualifying for the U.S. Amateur. Then on Sunday at Boulder Country Club, he secured what he called "definitely the biggest win of my life -- by far" by claiming the title in the CGA Amateur Championship presented by Webster Investment Advisors.

By just about any standard, that's a heck of a fortnight.

"Except for my hiccup in the (CGA) Match Play (where, as the No. 64 seed, he lost to defending champion Nick Nosewicz in 20 holes in the round of 64), it's been a great summer," the 21-year-old said.

2016 Champion - Jeff Oneth of Colorado GC

With all due respect to Jeff Oneth of Colorado Golf Club -- who put on a nice display of golf in winning the CGA Senior Match Play, particularly down the stretch -- his performance wasn't the most impressive happening Thursday at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont.

And it also wasn't the afternoon hailstorm that left much of the course looking like it had just been subjected to a mid-winter snowfall.

No, the most impressive site was the lightning that hit a tree (below) near the 14th green, within an hour after the senior finalists had stopped play on that hole due to dangerous conditions. Not only did the lightning strike leave a big mark on the tree, but large shreds of the torn-off bark were spread across the fairway as far as 40 yards away from the base of the tree.

2016 Champion - Kevin Ott of The Club at Rolling HIlls

When Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore was apprised of who stood atop the leaderboard with nine holes left in the 45th CGA Senior Amateur Championship, he noted, "It's like a club championship."

Indeed, with Club at Rolling Hills members Kevin Ott and Bill Fowler setting the pace throughout much of the CGA Senior Am -- which just happened to be played at Rolling Hills -- it had some of the flavor of an intraclub tournament.

And the final outcome on Thursday further bore that out. Ott and Fowler battled it out through the final round and ended up finishing 1-2, with Thomas Roos of Spring Valley Golf Club tying Fowler for the runner-up spot.

"This is definitely a home-course advantage, for sure," Ott said after celebrating his 51st birthday with the victory. "...

2016 Champion - Griffin Barela of Lakewood

Griffin Barela of Lakewood added another memorable chapter to his storybook year of 2016 on Wednesday by winning the Colorado Junior Match Play, the third junior major of the year in the state.

The victory capped a trifecta of sorts for Barela, who earlier this year won the first-ever tournament conducted by the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado, then was the qualifying medalist in Colorado for the U.S. Junior Amateur.

"I feel I've been improving a lot the last couple of years, and this past winter I got to a point with my game where I could be consistently really solid, and I think that's showed in my results this year," said Barela, who plans to play golf at the University of Wisconsin starting in the fall of 2017.

On Wednesday at The Ridge at Castle Pines North, Barela won two down-to-the-wire matches, a 19-hole victory over Lakewood High School teammate Jack Castiglia in the semifinals and a 1-up win over David Leede of Greenwood Village in the title match.

2016 Champion - Braden Bentley of Colorado Springs

The significance -- both from a historical and novel standpoint -- of Braden Bentley's victory on Wednesday wasn't lost on the Colorado Springs resident.

In winning the boys Colorado Junior Amateur -- the first "major" of the inaugural season of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado, but also an outgrowth of the CGA Junior Stroke Play, which dates back to 1977 -- Bentley appreciated the importance of the moment at Eisenhower Golf Club.

"It's cool to be the first of a new era," the 18-year-old said. "It's cool to think I'm the first one of so many junior golfers that are going (to win these Junior Golf Alliance majors). It's also good to be part of the tradition of the (CGA Junior) Stroke Play that's been going on forever. Players like (current PGA Tour professional Mark Hubbard, the 2007 Junior Stroke Play champion) and so many others that are playing good golf at a high level that have won this tournament before. It's cool that it means it puts me in good company."

2016 Champion - Jon Lindstrom of Lakewood CC

As Herman's Hermits sang a half-century ago in one of their hit songs, "second verse, same as the first."

In the case of the CGA Mid-Amateur Championship the last two years, the second "verse" at least was remarkably close to the same as the first.

Not only did Jon Lindstrom of Lakewood Country Club win the CGA Mid-Am by four strokes for the second straight year on Sunday, but the top four finishers were the same in 2016 as they were in 2015. In fact, they were almost in the exact same order, with the only difference being Steve Irwin tying for second this year and placing third alone in 2015.

Lindstrom, the 49-year-old Broomfield resident who previously won the Mid-Amateur in 2008 and '15, became just the third player to have captured the championship at least three times, joining Rick DeWitt (seven victories) and Keith Humerickhouse (four).

2016 Champion - Kyler Dunkle of the Club at Pradera

Kyler Dunkle apparently takes to heart the 19th-century admonition to "go West, young man."

The Parker resident won his second CGA championship on Sunday, and both of those titles have come in western Colorado.

A year after winning the CGA Father/Son by five strokes with his dad Jason at Ironbridge Golf Club in Glenwood Springs, Kyler Dunkle prevailed by four Sunday in the 34th CGA Western Chapter Championship at Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle.

"I've always enjoyed being in the mountains, (whether it be) growing up coming up with my parents or skiing a lot with my buddies," said Dunkle, who plays out of the Club at Pradera. "I just feel comfortable. It helps that the courses I've been able to win my championships on are great courses and they're really fun to play. (He qualified for the 2015 Colorado Open with a 68 at Eagle Ranch.) Eagle Ranch is a really fun course to play, I'm comfortable on it and I've had relatively good success.

2016 Champions - Steve Irwin and Barry Erwin

Whether your surname is Irwin or Erwin, this weekend spelled victory in the CGA Four-Ball Championship.

Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club and Barry Erwin of Murphy Creek Golf Course led -- or co-led -- from wire to wire and posted a one-stroke win Sunday at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in the 35th CGA Four-Ball.

It marked a record third CGA Four-Ball title for Irwin -- all with different partners. The 42-year-old son of three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin prevailed in 2004 with Pat Diaz and in 2009 with Alex Buecking. No one else has won more than two CGA Four-Balls.

Overall, Irwin owns six CGA championship wins, having also captured a Match Play and two Mid-Amateurs. But the last of those victories had come in 2009, though he did team up with Richard Bradsby to capture The Broadmoor Invitation four-ball title this past summer.

SENIOR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONS

2016 Senior Champions - Bill Fowler and Robert Polk

Robert Polk, who on Wednesday won his third CGA Senior Four-Ball Championship with his third different partner, joked with 2016 teammate Bill Fowler that he soon may be switching him out too.

"He keeps trading down, getting somebody younger," said Fowler, who just turned 53.

"I'm not stupid," the 60-year-old Polk said with a hearty laugh. "You better watch yourself."

"I turned 53 yesterday," Fowler noted. "He's looking for somebody 50."

All joking aside, the Polk-Fowler team has certainly proven effective. Besides being runner-up together in the 2013 CGA Senior Four-Ball and winning this year, they qualified for the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, where a year ago they were the third-oldest team in the field.

2016 Champions - Jimmy and Ray Makloski of Pueblo

In sports, it's often not how you start, but how you finish that's most important.

For that, Ray and Jimmy Makloski of Pueblo Country Club are thankful.

The Makloskis trailed 2015 CGA Father/Son champions Jason and Kyler Dunkle of the Club at Pradera by three shots going into Sunday's final round of the inaugural CGA Parent/Child Championship at Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club in Steamboat Springs. And after opening with a triple bogey in Sunday's foursomes stroke play format, and the Dunkles making a birdie on No. 2, the Dunkles' lead stood at a whopping seven shots.

But the Makloskis, who each won a significant CGA individual title in 2012, not only made up that deficit, but Jimmy Makloski drained a 7-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to give him and his dad the title.

CGA/CWGA amateurs sweep all 3 divisions in Colorado Cup Matches

In some respects, these are unprecedented times for the amateurs in the Colorado Cup Matches they play against professionals from the Colorado PGA.

To wit:

-- On Tuesday, when the matches were contested for the 46th year overall, and the 11th year with a women's division, the CGA and CWGA amateurs swept the titles in the open, senior and women's competitions for the first time.

-- The eight-point winning margin in the open division (13-5) was the largest since the pros won 13.5-4.5 in 2002. (The CGA's open team is pictured above.)

-- With Tuesday's victory at Valley Country Club, the amateurs have now won the open division three straight years, something they had never done before since the Cup Matches began in 1971. In fact, the last time the amateurs had won two straight before this current run was 2000-01, when their teams included a current PGA Tour player (Kevin Stadler), the winners of four Colorado Opens (Derek Tolan, Stadler and Ben Portie) and a Colorado Golf Hall of Famer (Rick DeWitt).

-- And, of course, the CWGA amateurs continue to own a remarkable unblemished record, having gone 11-0 against the professionals.

2016 Champion - Battlement Mesa Golf Club

The players from Battlement Mesa Golf Club had to travel a long, tough road -- literally and figuratively -- but that didn't keep them from emerging with the title in the season-long CGA Team Interclub Championship that concluded Sunday at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora.

After a trip of more than 200 miles to participate in the finals of the net match play championship, Battlement Mesa handed The Broadmoor Golf Club its first loss of the season, scoring a decisive 26-10 victory in the title match. Battlement Mesa claimed the trophy despite being the 16th seed in the 16-team playoffs.

It marked the first CGA Team Interclub title for Battlement Mesa (pictured above), which made it to the finals in 2011 but lost to Lone Tree Golf Club, which remains the only two-time winner of the event.
