By Gary Baines – 08/21/2019

Sam Saunders doesn’t live in Colorado, but he sure seems to be making himself at home in the Centennial State in 2019.

The Albuquerque resident won the Navajo Trail Open in Durango in June and the CoBank Colorado Open in Denver in July. And this week, he’ll try to pull off a Colorado trifecta.

Saunders will be among the favorites when the Rocky Mountain Open Presented by Sinclair is contested Friday through Sunday at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction.

After winning $5,500 at the Navajo Trail Open and $100,000 at the Colorado Open, Sanders will be seekly the newly-increased first prize of $15,000 at the RMO.

Justin Keiley of Hawaii, the two-time defending champion, is also in the field, as is three-time winner Monte Montgomery (1992, ’97, 2013) and fellow former champs Kyle Daniell of Rifle (2008) and Ryan Hogue of Mesa, Ariz. (2003). Former Coloradan Brandon Bingaman, who lost to Keiley in a playoff last year, is likewise scheduled to play.

Among the other prominent Coloradans in the field are Spencer Painton, Jake Staiano, Jackson Solem, Josh Seiple, Glenn Workman, Jimmy Makloski, Derek Fribbs and Doug Rohrbaugh.

The RMO was first played 80 years ago.
