Strong field set to tee it up at CGA Western Chapter Championship at Gypsum Creek GC

It’s going to be an eventful remainder of August in the western half of Colorado when it comes to big golf tournaments.

Later this month, there’s the Sinclair Rocky Mountain Open Aug. 26-28 at Tiara Rado in Grand Junction, and the Navajo Trail Open Aug. 27-29 at Hillcrest in Durango.

And this weekend, the CGA will hold its 36-hole Western Chapter Championship at Gypsum Creek Golf Course in Gypsum, where more than 100 players are scheduled to tee it up.

It will be three tournaments in one on Saturday and Sunday, with open, senior and women’s divisions. The senior competition is limited to those 55 and older.

Kyle Pearson of Meridian Golf Club, a Colorado Mesa University golfer, is set to defend his open title. And two three-time CGA Mid-Amateur champs, Chris Thayer of Golden and Jon Lindstrom of Lakewood Country Club also are signed up.

In a strong senior field, among those competing are former CGA Senior Players of the Year Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club, David Delich of The Broadmoor Golf Club, Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Course, Sean Forey of The Club at Rolling Hills and Keith Atkins of Highland Meadows Golf Course, plus 2020 Super-Senior Amateur champ David Nelson of Columbine Country Club and former U.S. Senator Mark Udall of Coal Creek Golf Course.

And 12 golfers will vie for the women’s division title, including Julia Baroth of CommonGround Golf Course, who owns a plus-2.4 USGA Handicap Index.
