3 boys tied, Emma Bryant up by 5 in girls action at Colorado Junior Amateur; Katelyn Lehigh opens with 78 at U.S. Girls’ Junior

If day 1 of the Colorado Junior Amateur is any indication, the boys and girls competitions are shaping up in much different fashion.
In the boys tournament at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster, three players are tied for the lead, and another 14 are within four strokes of the top spot with 36 holes left in the three-round event.
On the girls side, no one is within four strokes of leader Emma Bryant of Aurora, who already has two Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado major titles to her credit.
Jeff Nelson of Commerce City, Aiden Krusoe of Highlands Ranch and Tyler Tyson of Arvada all matched 2-under-par 70s on Monday to share the boys lead, with Jeffrey Zhou of Greenwood Village one back.
Nelson was a bogey-free 4 under par through 16 holes, but bogeyed his last two.
The University of Denver-bound Bryant started off with a 3-under-par 69, giving her a five-stroke lead after Monday. That was despite Bryant making a double bogey on the 16th hole — her seventh of the day — in round 1. Overall, she finished with six birdies, one bogey and one double bogey.
Lily Nelson of Commerce City holds second place at 74, while Olivia Steen of Fort Collins is third at 75.

Meanwhile, in major national/international junior events:
— At the U.S. Girls’ Junior in Chevy Chase, Md., Katelyn Lehigh of Loveland shot an 8-over-par 78 on Monday, leaving her tied for 96th place out of the 156-person field.
Lehigh, the 5A girls state high school individual champion, made it into the field after originally being the first alternate from the Lake Valley Golf Club qualifying site.
Lehigh was 7 over par for her first six holes, but went just 1 over the rest of the way on Monday. She will have to move into the top 64 after Tuesday’s second round in order to qualify for match play.
Xin Kou of China leads at 4-under-par 66.

— At the Boys Junior PGA Championship in Lexington, Ky., Luke Cushman of Castle Rock opened with a 6-over-par 77 and shares 105th place in the 144-player field. Cushman made three birdies, three bogeys, a double bogey and a quadruple bogey. He trails leader Nick Dunlap by 13.
