DU’s John Sand moves into top 10 with 64 at Pacific Coast Amateur; Ryan Axlund top Coloradan through 3 rounds

Two Coloradans shot under par on Thursday and University of Denver golfer John Sand fired one of the low rounds of the day — a a 7-under 64 — at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., as the third round of the 72-hole Pacific Coast Amateur wrapped up.

Sand, a resident of Hoquim, Wash., rebounded from a first-round 75 with scores of 67-64 to move into eighth place at the site of the 2015 U.S. Open. He trails leader Devon Bling of Ridgecrest, Calif., by seven shots.

On Thursday, Sand made nine birdies and two bogeys. He had 10 3s on his card.

Meanwhile, Ryan Axlund of Englewood, the 2019 CGA Mid-Amateur champion, moved into the top 40 with a 2-under 69 in round 3. He stands at 2-over 215 overall. 

Also carding a red total on Thursday was 2015 CGA Match Play winner Nick Nosewicz of Aurora (70 for a 222 total). Rounding out the scores for the Coloradans was 2019 CGA Match Play champ Josh McLaughlin of Loveland (78 for a 225 total).

Play at the Pac Coast will conclude on Friday.

On Wednesday, the three Coloradans placed 13th while representing the CGA in the Pacific Coast Amateur’s 36-hole Morse Cup competition. (READ MORE)
