Coloradan Ben Lanting in top 10 after opening round of national Assistant PGA Professional Championship

By Gary Baines – 11/11/2021

Ben Lanting of Bear Creek Golf Club, who has won three of the last four Colorado Assistant PGA Championships, shot a 2-under-par 70 and shares 10th place after Thursday’s opening round of the national Assistant PGA Professional Championship, sponsored by National Car Rental.

Lanting, the runner-up in the Colorado PGA Professional Championship in September, made three birdies and a bogey at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and trails leader Scott Ford by five strokes.

Meanwhile, Andy Connell of The Ridge at Castle Pines North posted an even-par 72, making three birdies and three bogeys — and is tied for 35th place. Colorado PGA Player of the Year Geoff Keffer of Lakewood Country Club carded a 74 and Ryan Wroblewski of Colorado Golf Club a 77.

The 72-hole event will continue through Sunday.

Gunner Wiebe, the 2010 CGA Player of the Year, won the national championship last year but isn’t defending his title as he’s left his job as a PGA assistant professional.

Here are the scores for all the Coloradans competing at PGA Golf Club:

10. Ben Lanting, Bear Creek GC 70

35. Andy Connell, The Ridge at Castle Pines North 72
