Colorado Springs’ Steve Ivan rallies late in a big way to advance to round of 32 at U.S. Senior Amateur; Denver’s Jon Lindstrom ousted in round of 64, while CGA champ John Hornbeck of Wyoming wins to move on

Steve Ivan of Colorado Springs won the last three holes of the match after being 2 down after 16 holes on Monday to advance to the round of 32 at the U.S. Senior Amateur in Truckee, Calif.
Ivan, a two-time CGA Senior Player of the Year, fell 2 down after Brad Wayment of Mesa, Ariz., birdied the 16th hole at Martis Camp Club. But the Coloradan parred the 17th and 18th holes for wins to force “overtime”. Then he parred the 19th hole, while Wayment made his third straight bogey, giving Ivan a spot in the final 32.
On Tuesday morning, Ivan will face Jody Fanagan off Ireland for the right to advance to Tuesday afternoon’s final 16. Fanagan defeated Chris Hartenstein of Austin, Texas 2 up in the round of 64.
Ivan was 2 up after three holes in Monday’s match, but Wayment won four of the next six holes (4-9) — one with a birdie, the others with pars — to go 2 up. The players exchanged hole victories until Wayment was 2 up after 16, leading to Ivan’s comeback for victory. Ivan ended up 3 over par for 19 holes on Monday.
Meanwhile, Jon Lindstrom of Denver, the fourth-ranked amateur in the world among players 55 and older, bowed out after in the round of 64.
But John Hornbeck of Saratoga, Wyo. — winner of four CGA titles, including this year’s Super-Senior Amateur — cruised to a 6-and-5 victory over Michael Zoerhoff of Caledonia, Mich.
Lindstrom, who finished ninth in the British Senior Amateur this summer, never led in his round-of-64 matchup with Greg Sanders of Anchorage, Alaska, who prevailed 3 and 2. The Lakewood Country Club member was 4 down after nine holes, but won three of the next five — two with birdies — to cut the deficit to 1 down after 14 holes. But Sanders won 15 with a par and 16 with a birdie to close out the match. Lindstrom finished 2 over for 15 holes.
Hornbeck, a Wyoming State Golf Association Hall of Famer, won the first three holes with birdies and tied the fourth with a birdie. He then won four of the last five holes to prevail, ending up even par for the 13 holes. Hornbeck has advanced as far as the quarterfinals of the U.S. Senior Am in his past appearances.
