Among Nation’s ‘Best You Can Play’

Redlands Mesa, The Broadmoor’s East Course draw honors from Golfweek

By Gary Baines – 12/31/2019

Two Colorado courses made the grade earlier this month when Golfweek published its “Top 100 Courses You Can Play” in the U.S.

The ranking was compiled from Golfweek’s lists of the best modern and classic courses in the U.S., with classic being defined as pre-1960 and modern as since 1960. The digital magazine then separated out the courses from those rankings that fall into the public-access category.

The Colorado facilities that earned spots in the Top 100 Courses You Can Play are The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa, a Jim Engh-designed layout in Grand Junction, and the East Course at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, designed by Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Redlands Mesa (pictured above in a photo from redlandsmesa.com) was ranked No. 49 on Golfweek’s list, while The Broadmoor’s East Course, which just in the last decade has hosted the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open and the 2018 U.S. Senior Open, checked in at No. 83.

Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula in California, which hosted the U.S. Open this year, led Golfweek’s rankings. Here’s the overall top 10:

1. Pebble Beach GL, Pebble Beach, Calif.

2. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Pacific Dunes), Bandon, Ore.

3. Pinehurst No. 2, Pinehurst, N.C.

4. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Old Macdonald), Bandon, Ore.

5. Whistling Straits (Straits), Mosel, Wis.

6. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Dunes), Bandon, Ore.

7. Shadow Creek (North), Las Vegas, Nev.

8. Bethpage State Park (Black), Farmingdale, N.Y.

9. Kiawah Island Golf Resort (Ocean Course), Kiawah Island, S.C.

10. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Trails), Bandon, Ore.
