Coloradans Erickson, Bryant, Ott post top-5 finishes in college tourneys; Shockley notches another coaching victory

Tuesday marked an oddity in local college golf. Of the nine NCAA Division I golf teams based in Colorado, eight were concluding tournaments on the same day. Only the University of Northern Colorado women were not competing.
And on this extremely busy Tuesday, there were plenty of notable performances by players from the Colorado schools and others with ties to the Centennial State. That includes four top-10 individual finishes by Colorado residents, and a coaching victory by a Colorado native.
Here’s a rundown of the top performances:
— At the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic in Chula Vista, Calif., three Coloradans recorded top-five showings in a tournament which featured nine teams ranked in the top 45 in the nation.
Dan Erickson of Texas A&M, a resident of Loveland, placed fourth in the 100-man field with a 4-under-par 212 total, which left him four strokes behind champion Tim Widing of San Francisco.
The last two CGA Les Fowler Players of the Year — sophomore Davis Bryant of Colorado State and senior teammate AJ Ott — tied for fifth place at 213. Bryant went 71-70-72 and Ott 73-70-70. Both Ott and Erickson eagled the par-4 17th hole on Tuesday. The San Diego Classic marked the third top-10 of the season for both Bryant and Ott.
CSU, ranked 19th in the nation by Golfstat, placed seventh out of 19 teams, while the University of Colorado was ninth and Air Force 19th.
— University of Denver senior Mary Weinstein, from Highlands Ranch, scored her fourth top-10 individual finish of the season by placing 10th on Tuesday at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson. The three-time CGA Women’s Player of the Year went 71-77-67 for a 1-under-par 215 total, which left her eight strokes behind winner Kailie Vongsaga of Arizona.
DU freshman Anna Zanusso, coming off a victory at the Westbrook Invitational where she matched the NCAA women’s record for a single round by shooting a 61, finished 11th at the Wildcat Invite.
As a team, DU placed fourth in the 11-school event, 27 strokes back of champion Arizona. The Pioneers were 10 under par on Tuesday, a final-round best. CU ended up in seventh place.
— Senior Coby Welch from the University of Northern Colorado was looking for his sixth top-10 showing of the season, but a bogey on his final hole left him 12th at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Oregon.
UNC and the University of Denver ended up tying for 13th place in the 16-team tournament.
Joining Welch and Zanusso with individual finishes in the 11-15 range on Tuesday were CU’s Daniel O’Loughlin and John Paterson (tied for 14th at the Lamkins Grips San Diego Classic).
— Meanwhile, Oregon State, coached by Colorado native and former University of Denver golfer Dawn Shockley, posted its second team title of the season and the fourth overall for Shockley as a head coach as the Beavers prevailed at the Juli Inkster Meadow Club Collegiate in Fairfax, Calif. Colorado State placed 12th in the 13-team field.
