Tide turns as CSU’s Gunnar Broin sees his run end in round of 64 at U.S. Amateur

Wednesday proved a day to remember for Colorado State University golfer Gunnar Broin at the U.S. Amateur. But a new day brought a change of momentum.
On Wednesday, the sophomore from Chanhassen, Minn., went birdie-eagle his final two holes of stroke play to go from outside the cut line to inside and advancing to match play. Then before darkness suspended his round-of-64 match, he made a birdie and an eagle to build a 2-up lead through five holes at storied Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club.
But when Broin resumed his match on Thursday morning, the tide turned. University of Georgia golfer Trent Phillips, from Boiling Springs, S.C., won five of the first six holes on Thursday, with Broin taking hole No. 7. That gave Phillips a 2-up lead, and he didn’t lose a hole the rest of the way in posting a 3-and-1 victory.
Phillips’ run of won holes from 8 through 11 all came with pars as Broin went bogey-double bogey-bogey-bogey at the formidable course. Phillips closed things out on No. 17 with a par as Broin carded a double bogey.
For the match — both days — Broin finished 7 over. He was 10 over for the 12 holes played on Thursday. Phillips was 2 over for the match and 3 over for the Thursday portion.
