Colorado Christian’s Carlson becomes second consecutive Colorado-based golfer to win men’s NCAA DII West/South Central Regional title

Men’s NCAA Division II Regional tournaments seem to agree with players from Colorado-based schools.
A year after George Markham from the Colorado School of Mines earned the individual title at the West/South Central Regional, junior Chase Carlson from Colorado Christian duplicated that feat.
Carlson, who hails from Tacoma, Wash., shot his third consecutive round in the 60s — in this case a 3-under-par 69 — on Saturday to land the top spot out of the field of 108 in St. George, Utah.
In earning his first individual victory of the season, Carlson (pictured at left above in a photo from the Colorado Christian golf website) made six birdies and three bogeys on Saturday. And he prevailed despite bogeying his final two holes, finishing with a 12-under-par 204 total.
That was one stroke better than runner-up Hayden Hui of UC San Diego, who closed with a 67.
The performance gave Carlson a berth in the NCAA Division II national tournament, set for May 20-24 in Daniels, West Virginia. All told, the top four teams and the top two individuals not on those teams will advance to West Virginia.
Colorado’s two reginal team qualifiers saw their season end on Saturday. Colorado Mesa (9 over par for three days) finished 11th out of 20 teams, while Colorado School of Mines (12 over) came in 12th.
Nic Beno of Mines posted a top-10 showing, tying for 10th place at 4-under 212. (Markham was 25th in his title defense, at 216.) Isaac Petersilie led the way for Mesa individually, checking in in 14th place at 213.
