Eyes on the Prize

Last 8 winners of CGA Senior Amateur set to tee it up at 49th edition of championship as Perry Park CC will host

By Gary Baines – 9/28/2020

Last year’s CGA Senior Amateur produced what are believed to be two scoring records. Wyoming resident John Hornbeck won the event by a whopping 13 strokes and with a 13-under-par total for three rounds.

It’s unlikely anyone will surpass that high bar this week when the Senior Amateur is held for the 49th time, but a formidable field will give it the best it’s got Tuesday through Thursday. Picturesque Perry Park Country Club in Larkspur will host the Senior Am for the first time since 1993.

Each of the past eight winners of the Senior Amateur are back trying to add another title: Hornbeck (2019), Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club (2005, ’07, ’09 and ’18), Steve Ivan of Patty Jewett Golf Course (2017), Kevin Ott of The Club at Rolling Hills (2016), Bill Fowler of Rolling Hills (2015), Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore of Cherry Hills Country Club (2014), Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Club (2013) and David Delich of The Broadmoor Golf Club.

Only three players in history have won the CGA Senior Amateur as many times — or more — than Polk: Larry Eaton (seven times), John Olive (five) and Les Fowler (four).

Moore, meanwhile, is coming off a victory last week in the CGA Super-Senior Match Play.

Ivan won the CGA Senior Match Play earlier this year, defeating Polk in the final. In fact, in the last six CGA senior majors, Ivan’s finishes have gone a remarkable first-second-second-second-second-first.

Beyond the former champions, there are numerous players with very strong senior resumes also entered in the 84-man field at Perry Park, including Scott Sullivan of Bookcliff Country Club, Robin Bradbury of Omni Interlocken Resort, Sean Forey of Rolling Hills, Gary Albrecht of CommonGround Golf Course, Guy Mertz of TPC Colorado, David Nelson of Columbine Country Club and Victor Minovich of Foothills Golf Course.

A cut will be made — to the low 40 players and ties — after 36 holes of the 54-hole event.

The CGA Senior Amateur is limited to players 54 and older.
