Moore/Austin, winners of CGA Women’s Mashie title 6 times together, advance to semifinals

By Gary Baines – 6/8/2020

The top three seeds — including Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Janet Moore and Christie Austin of Cherry Hills Country Club — won their quarterfinal matches on Monday in championship flight action at the CGA Women’s Mashie Championship in Thornton.

Moore and Austin — who have won six Mashie titles together, with Moore capturing another two with other partners — defeated Barb Wendell of Frost Creek and Gabi Cortez of University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch, 4 and 2 in the better-ball match-play event.

Also advancing at Todd Creek Golf Club to the championship flight semifinals were top-seeded Holly Schaefer of Columbine Country Club and teammate Mackenzie Cohen of Metro Denver eClub (6 and 5 victory), third-seeded Courtney Andersson and Emily Donaldson of DUGC of Highlands Ranch (1 up) and fifth-seeded Kathy Malpass of Hiwan Golf Club and Suzy Leprino of Lakewood Country Club (19 holes).

Schaefer won last year’s title with Tiffany Maurycy, and Cohen won the 5A girls state high school individual title in 2012.

In Tuesday’s semis — set for the tournament’s other site, Thorncreek Golf Course — Cohen and Schaefer will face Malpass and Leprino, while Moore and Austin will take on Andersson and Donaldson.

This year’s Mashie features 84 teams overall — broken up into 11 flights. They play one match each at Todd Creek and Thorncreek on Monday and Tuesday before the championship and consolation bracket winners from each flight compete for titles on Wednesday at Todd Creek.

The Mashie is the first CGA women’s championship of 2020.
