CGA Amateur champ Dunkle shares second place after opening day of men’s NCAA nationals

By Gary Baines – 05/24/2019

Kyler Dunkle, the former CGA Player of the Year and the 2018 CGA Amateur champion, appears to be making the most of the final college tournament of his career.

The University of Utah senior opened with a 3-under-par 69 Friday in the men’s NCAA Division I nationals being held in Fayetteville, Ark. That leaves him in a tie for second place out of the field of 156 players.

Dunkle (pictured) made five birdies and two bogeys on the formidable Blessings Golf Club and trails leader Collin Morikawa of Cal by two strokes.

Dunkle is one of four Pac-12 players who hold down the top five spots individually.

The stroke-play portion of the event will continue through Monday.

Meanwhile, Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Mark Crabtree, coach of the University of Louisville, finds the Cardinals in 27th place out of the 30 teams competing at nationals.

Here are the scores for the players with strong Colorado ties competing at the men’s NCAA Division I finals:

2. 2018 CGA Amateur champion Kyler Dunkle, Utah 69

87. Coloradan Dan Erickson, Texas A&M 78
