Finals Set

Kim Eaton/Kristine Franklin beat defending champs to earn spot in title match of CGA Women’s Mashie against Janet Moore/Marin Halvorsen

By Gary Baines – 5/25/2021

Kristine Franklin, competing at her home course, teamed up with Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kim Eaton to defeat the defending champions on Tuesday, earning a spot in the championship finals of the CGA Women’s Mashie. There, they’ll face eight-time champion Janet Moore and partner Marin Halvorsen of Cherry Hills Country Club.

The top two seeds in the better-ball match-play tournament — Moore and Halvorsen are seeded first — will square off for the title on Wednesday at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.

Franklin, the CGA Women’s Senior Player of the Year the past three years, and Eaton beat 2020 champions and Colorado Christian University teammates Courtney Andersson and Emily Donaldson 2 and 1 in Tuesday’s semifinals at The Ranch Country Club in Westminster, Franklin’s home course.

And Moore and Halvorsen, the latter winner of the last three College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin individual titles, advanced with a 4-and-3 victory over 2008 champions Stacey Arnold and D’Ann Kimbrel of West Woods Golf Club.

Should Eaton and Franklin win on Wednesday, the former would establish the outright record for CGA women’s/CWGA championship titles with 26. Eaton currently shares the mark with fellow Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Carol Flenniken.

Meanwhile, Moore, another Hall of Famer, will be seeking her record ninth Mashie title, but her first since 2017.

The championship flight is one of 12 flights in the Mashie, with eight teams in each. Competitors played one match each at Broadlands and The Ranch on Monday and Tuesday before all the championship and consolation finals will be contested at Broadlands on Wednesday.

The Mashie marks the first CGA women’s championship of 2021.
