Coloradan Chen opens with 76 at U.S. Girls’ Junior in Wisconsin; 2020 championship will be held in Colorado

A year before Colorado hosts the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship — July 13-18, 2020 at Eisenhower Golf Club’s Blue Course — the Colorado competitors in the 2019 tournament will need a second-day rally if they hope to play more than two days at the national event at SentryWorld in Stevens, Point, Wis.

With the top 64 players after two days of stroke play advancing to match play, Kaylee Chen (pictured above) of Greenwood Village sits in 78th place in the 156-person field, while Hailey Schalk of Erie is 127th.

Chen, a 15-year-old who recently won the girls title at the Colorado Junior Amateur, opened with a 4-over-par 76 on Monday at SentryWorld. The Cherry Creek High School student made a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey in round 1.

Hailey Schalk of Erie shot an 80 in Monday’s first round of stroke play.

Schalk, a three-time girls state high school champion from Holy Family, posted an 80 on Monday. The future University of Colorado golfer carded one birdie and nine bogeys on Monday.

Yuka Saso of the Philippines, winner of the national Girls Junior PGA Championship earlier this month, shot a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 to take a three-shot lead in stroke play.

After one round, a score of 2 over par or better was necessary to be in the top 64.
