Giving Himself a Cushion

CSU’s Bryant builds lead to 5 at halfway point of CGA Amateur at Lakewood CC

By Gary Baines – 08/09/2019

A year ago at about this time, Davis Bryant of Green Valley Ranch Golf Club was putting the final touches on a stellar junior golf career.

This summer, the 19-year-old Colorado State University golfer has thrown himself into open-age-division championship golf in the state, and he’s proven to be a quick learner.

After making it to the round of 16 at the CGA Match Play and being the second low amateur at the CoBank Colorado Open, Bryant has opened up a five-stroke lead at the halfway point of the CGA Amateur at Lakewood Country Club.

A winner of four total Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado majors in 2017 and ’18, Bryant backed up his first-round 65 with a 3-under-par 68 on Friday to post a 9-under 133 total at the halfway point of the 72-hole championship.

Bryant (pictured) carded five birdies on Friday, giving him a dozen for the first two rounds. He’s birdied holes 1, 12 and 13 both days at Lakewood.

Steve Irwin, one of nine Lakewood Country Club members competing in the CGA Amateur, remains in second place, though he fell five behind Bryant. The 2004 CGA Player of the Year made two birdies and two bogeys in a round of even-par 71 on Friday.

Irwin’s dad, three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin, won the CGA Amateur three times in the 1960s.

Another former CGA Player of the Year, 2014 winner of that award Michael Harrington of Garden of the Gods Club, moved into a share of third place at 139 with 2019 CGA Match Play champion Josh McLaughlin of the Olde Course at Loveland, and 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier Jack Castiglia of Greeley Country Club, a University of Northern Colorado golfer.

Harrington posted the low round on Friday, a 4-under-par 67, after playing his final 10 holes in 5 under par in round 2. McLaughlin shot a 68 and Castiglia a 69 after starting off with three straight birdies.

The field was cut to the low 40 players and ties after Friday’s second round, with the 42 players who stood at 8-over 150 or better sticking around for the weekend.

Among those who didn’t make the cut were 2018 runner-up Coby Welch of Inverness Golf Club (DQ for signing for incorrect score on a hole), four-time CGA Mid-Amateur champion Keith Humerickhouse of Gypsum Creek Golf Course (158), three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club (153) and recent CGA Senior Match Play champ Scott Sullivan ov Bookcliff Country Club (151).

Play will continue through Sunday.
