CU men’s golf team records sixth runner-up finish of the season, to go along with a fall victory

By Gary Baines – 4/12/2025

The University of Colorado men’s golf team undoubtedly would prefer to have had more team titles come its way this season, but there’s plenty to be said for almost always finishing on the first page of the scoreboard.

In what has become a common refrain for the Buffs in the 2024-25 campaign, they finished runner-up on Saturday in their regular-season finale, at the Thunderbird Collegiate in Phoenix.

It was the sixth second-place team showing of the season for CU, to go along with a victory at the Tucker Intercollegiate in September. That’s remarkable considering the program has played in 11 tournaments as a team — 10 of them stroke-play events. The Buffs also have two other top-5 finishes to their credit.

At the Thunderbird, CU, ranked No. 33 among the nation’s Division I men, ended up 27 under par for three rounds, 12 strokes behind champion Arizona State, the No. 5 team in DI. In all, 10 schools were in the field, including seven ranked in the top 50.

The Buffs put four players in the top 20 individually, led by sophomore Ty Holbrook, who placed ninth at 7 under par, which left him five strokes out of the top spot. Also in the top 20 for CU were Justin Biwer (14th), Coloradan Hunter Swanson (17th) and Dylan McDermott (17th).

Next up for CU is the Big 12 Conference Championship April 22-24 in Tulsa, Okla.
