By Gary Baines – 06/24/2019

The top eight seeds, including defending champion John Hornbeck of Wyoming, won their opening matches on Monday in the 50th CGA Senior Match Play Championship at Meadows Golf Club in Littleton.

Hornbeck (pictured), the No. 1 seed, easily advanced in his round-of-64 match against Dave Bullock of Cherry Hills Country Club, 7 and 6.

Other top eight seeds to move into the round of 32 were Keith Atkins of Highland Meadows (1 up), Steve Ivan of Patty Jewett (6 and 5), Scott Sullivan of Bookcliff (5 and 4), Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club (3 and 2), Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore of Cherry Hills (1 up), Sean Forey of Rolling Hills (concession) and Victor Minovich of Foothills (4 and 3)

Three-time champion David Delich of The Broadmoor scored a 3-and-2 victory over Dave Runberg of CommonGround.

A couple of former champs were ousted in the first round, with Pat Bucci of West Woods (2017) falling to Greg Kellums of Woodmoor 2 and 1, and Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch (2013) losing to Doug Phelps of Foothills 1 up.

Two rounds of matches are planned for both Tuesday and Wednesday in the Senior Match Play — which is limited to players 53 and older — and the 18-hole final is set for Thursday.
