Making Inroads in Spain

Coloradan Davis Bryant and Dan Erickson, who has had significant ties to the state in recent years, advance to final stage of Q-school on European-based DP World Tour

Globetrotting over the last couple of months seems to be paying off for Davis Bryant of Aurora and Dan Erickson, whose family moved to northern Colorado in 2018.

Since early September, the two have been competing in Q-school for both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, an endeavor that has taken them from the U.S. to Sweden to the U.S. to Spain.

They both successfully negotiated the first stage of PGA Tour Q-school — Bryant in Nebraska and Erickson in Arizona. And they both made it through the first stage of qualifying in Europe as Erickson earned medalist honors in Sweden and Bryant also advanced at the same site.

And on Sunday and Monday, the two punched their tickets to the final stage of DP World Tour Q-school — which starts on Friday — through their performances at different second-stage sites in Spain.

Bryant, winner of both the Inspirato Colorado Open and the Wyoming State Open this past summer, needed a playoff on Monday in Almeria, Spain to advance. After tying for 20th at a site where exactly 23 players moved on, the 2019 CGA Player of the Year birdied the first extra hole — 9-iron to 2 feet — to successfully negotiate a seven-man playoff for the final four spots.

The former Colorado State University golfer went 67-70-70-70 in regulation for an 11-under-par total, which left him nine strokes back of medalist Jiri Zuska. Bryant finished the week with 15 birdies (plus the one in the playoff) and four bogeys. He went bogey-free in rounds 1 and 3.

Erickson finished eighth on Sunday in Albacete, Spain, where the top 24 advanced. The former Texas A&M golfer carded scores of 66-71-68-67 for a 12-under-par total, which left him 10 strokes behind medalist David Boriboonsub. Erickson carded an eagle, 21 birdies, seven bogeys and two double bogeys over four rounds.

The final stage of DP World Tour Q-school is set for Nov. 8-13 in Tarragona, Spain, where 156 competitors will compete on two courses for a total of six rounds. The top 20 finishers and ties will earn 2025 DP World Tour cards.
