In search of her first CGA women’s major title, DU’s Weinstein opens up 5-shot lead in CGA Women’s Stroke Play

By Gary Baines – 06/18/2019

Mary Weinstein of Highlands Ranch has accomplished plenty in her young golf career.

She’s won a girls state high school title, the Colorado Junior Amateur twice and the Colorado Junior PGA. She’s qualified twice for the U.S. Women’s Amateur. And twice each she’s been named women’s player of the year by the CGA and in Colorado junior golf.

But one thing she hasn’t done is win one of the CGA women’s major championships — the Stroke Play or the Match Play.

But the University of Denver golfer may rectify that situation on Wednesday at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora.

Weinstein (pictured) shot a 4-under-par 68 on Tuesday and opened up a five-shot lead going into Wednesday’s final round of the 72nd CGA Women’s Stroke Play. The Summit League Women’s Golfer of the Year stands at 6-under 138 — one of two players under par after 36 holes.

On Tuesday, Weinstein carded five birdies and one bogey.

She’s posted three top-four finishes in the Stroke Play in the last four years — a second and two fourths — as well as being the runner-up in last year’s CGA Women’s Match Play.

Holding second place after two rounds this week is Anna Kennedy of Colorado Golf Club, a Brigham Young University golfer. Kennedy made a birdie and two bogeys on Tuesday.

Erin Sargent of Twin Peaks Golf Course and the University of Wyoming, runner-up in this tournament the last two years, is in third place at 144 after likewise shooting a second-round 73.

Kelsey Webster of Boulder Country Club, the University of Colorado golfer who placed third in this event last year, sits in fourth at 146 after a 72.

The top 12 players from the championship/first flight after Tuesday’s second round will play for the championship title on Wednesday. Winners for the other three flights also will be crowned that day.
