Castle Rock’s Seiple falls just short of advancing to Final Stage of Korn Ferry Q-school; Dunkle also fails to advance

By Gary Baines — 11/01/2019

At the elite level of golf, the line between success and failure is ever so thin.

Just ask Josh Seiple of Castle Rock.

A finish in the top 20 and ties after Friday’s final round of the 72-hole Second Stage Q-school tournament in McKinney, Texas, would have given Seiple a spot in the Final Stage, and at least some status on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020.

But after playing the final four holes in 2 over par Friday in Texas, Seiple (pictured) finished one stroke out of the top 20 — in a tie for 24th place. And thus he won’t advance to the Final Stage of Korn Ferry Q-school this year.

The former University of Mississippi golfer went 70-74-66-72 for a 6-under-par 282 total in Texas. The 23 players at 281 or better will advance to the Final Stage.

Also falling short of moving on was former Coloradan Kyler Dunkle. The 2018 CGA Amateur champion, who played on PGA Tour Canada in 2019, finished in 57th place at 290.

Taylor Montgomery of Las Vegas, son of former Grand Junction resident Monte Montgomery, earned medalist honors on Friday with a 270 total.

Seiple made four birdies and four bogeys in Friday’s round of 72, but bogeyed Nos. 15 and 17— both par-3s.

Next week, more local players will compete at other sites in the Second Stage of Korn Ferry Q-school.
