CU men’s golf team records fifth top-2 finish of season with runner-up showing in San Diego; 3 Buffs in top 10 individually

It’s been quite a remarkable — and consistent — run for the University of Colorado men’s golf team this season.
The Buffs, ranked No. 33 nationally in NCAA Division I, finished tied for second out of 16 teams on Tuesday at the Lamkin Invitational at San Diego Country Club.
That means that CU has placed in the top two in the team standings at five of its eight tournaments this season. That’s not too shabby considering the average size of field for those eight tournaments is 18 schools.
That run includes a team victory at the Tucker Intercollegiate, plus four second places. On this occasion, CU (27 under par overall) ended up 16 strokes behind winner San Diego State. The Buffs have placed in the top five in all but one tournament this season — the Big 12 Match Play, where CU went 1-3 in its four matches.
CU put three players in the top 10 individually out of the 96-man field in San Diego. Seniors Justin Biwer and Dylan McDermott tied for sixth at 9 under par, which left them seven strokes behind champion Justin Hastings of San Diego State. And junior Hunter Swanson from Denver shared ninth place, at 8 under. Biwer went 68-69-70, McDermott 69-68-70, and Swanson 68-68-72.
Biwer posted his fifth top-10 finish of the season and 12th of his college career. It was his fourth top-6 showing this season. McDermott has now notched five top-10s this season and 16 as a collegian overall. As for Swanson, he’s recorded three top-10s this season and six overall in his college days.
Colorado State, ranked 44th in the country, placed sixth on Tuesday, at 11 under par. Coloradan Matthew Wilkinson, the 2024 CGA Match Play champion, led the way for the Rams, finishing 16th individual at 5 under par (73-68-70).
