UNC’s Coby Welch starts spring schedule with fifth top-10 finish of season
By Gary Baines – 2/11/2020
Coby Welch of Highlands Ranch is just a few months away from wrapping up his college golf career, and the University of Northern Colorado senior seems determined to go out on a high note.
Welch was stellar throughout the fall portion of the schedule, and he picked up where he left off this week in the spring schedule opener.
On Tuesday in St. George, Utah, Welch tied for second individually out of an 88-man field at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational. He shot rounds of 70-69 for a 5-under-par 139 total, which left him one stroke behind champion Colton Tanner of Utah at Sunbrook Golf Course.
For the season, Welch has posted five top-10 finishes in six tournaments this season, including a tie for first at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in September.
UNC, which led the 12-team Pat Hicks Invite after firing a 285 on day 1, posted a 298 on Tuesday and finished fourth at 583. Air Force, which also opened its spring schedule in St. George, placed sixth at 592. Joshua Wu led the Falcons individually by tying for 11th at 145.
