Colorado Christian’s Carlson grabs 3-stroke lead in NCAA DII Regional; Mesa, Mines tied for 10th place in team standings

Colorado Christian junior Chase Carlson hasn’t won an individual title this college season, though he has posted six top-10 finishes.
But if things keep going like they have been at the men’s NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional in St. George, Utah, Carlson (pictured in a Colorado Christian photo) will break the ice in a big way on Saturday.
Carlson, competing only as an individual this week, grabbed a three-stroke lead after Friday’s second round of the regional. He shot a 4-under-par 68, which left him at 9-under 135 and three better than the four players who share second place.
Carlson, who comes from Tacoma, Wash., went bogey-free on Thursday, and followed that up with a five-birdie, one-bogey performance on Friday.
Meanwhile, both Colorado-based programs competing in St. George had strong days and are tied in 10th place in the 20-school field with one round remaining.
Colorado Mesa posted a 5-under-par team total of 283, while Colorado School of Mines carded a 288 total. They’re both 11 over par for the tournament.
Isaac Petersilie (12th place at 2-under-par 142) is leading the way individually for Colorado Mesa, while Nic Beno (18th place at 144) is pacing Mines.
The top four teams and the top two individuals not on those teams from the regional will advance to the national finals, set for May 20-24 in Daniels, West Virginia.
