2020 CGA Women’s Match Play champ opens with 73 at U.S. Women’s Amateur; round 2 postponed until Wednesday

By Gary Baines – 8/3/2020

Monday marked the first USGA championship round of 2020 — at least in the U.S. — and University of Colorado golfer Kirsty Hodgkins is in position after day 1 to potentially stick around beyond just the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Women’s Amateur.

Hodgkins, the 2020 CGA Women’s Match Play champion, shot a solid 1-over-par 73 on Monday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. The Australian, who’s living in Boulder this summer, found herself in 24th place out of a field of 132 following round 1.

If Hodgkins finishes in the top 64 after Wednesday’s second round — Tuesday’s play was canceled due to a forecast for severe weather — she’ll advance to the match-play bracket. On Monday, Hodgkins played her final four holes in 2 under par for her 73, finishing the day with two birdies and three bogeys.

As of Monday night, Rachel Kuehn of Asheville, N.C., and Riley Smyth of Cary, N.C., shared the stroke-play lead at 4-under 68.

The last time before Tuesday that a full day of competition was missed at the U.S. Women’s Amateur was in 1990 in Summit, N.J.

University of Denver golfer Anna Zanusso also had an exemption into the U.S. Women’s Amateur, but opted not to participate because of the lengthy Covid-19-related quarantine requirements following travel as she lives in Italy.
