Alyson Bean rallies with final-round 65 to become 2nd DU golfer in last 4 years to claim individual title at Westbrook Invitational; Coloradan Leigha Devine posts top-10 finish

The Westbrook Invitational is held in Peoria, Ariz., and it’s hosted by the University of Wisconsin, but there’s something about the college tournament that brings out the best in select University of Denver women’s golfers.
Three years ago at the Westbrook Invite, DU golfer Anna Zanusso, then a freshman, matched the single-round scoring record for an NCAA women’s player by shooting an 11-under-par 61, then went on to claim the individual title.
And on Monday came another big highlight for the Pioneers.
Alyson Bean, a DU graduate student from Murrieta, Calif., tied for the individual title in the 79-player field, earning her first individual college victory in the process.
Bean closed with a 7-under-par 65 — the low round of this year’s tournament — to rally for a share of the top spot with Ohio State’s Caley McGinty, who posted a 67 on Monday. Both ended up at 9-under-par 207 for three rounds.
In her last four official college tournament rounds, Bean owns a scoring average of 68.5. In her first three large-field events of the spring schedule, Bean has finished seventh, 12th and first.
Bean, who caddied for low amateur Kelsey Webster in last year’s Inspirato Colorado Women’s Open, played her last 24 holes in Peoria in a bogey-free 10 under par.
So a DU golfer has now won the Westbrook Invitational individual title two of the last three times the tournament has been held (it was canceled in 2021). On Monday, the Pioneers finished third in the 14-team field, 11 strokes behind champion Nebraska.
Also scoring a top-10 individual showing in Peoria was two-time CGA Women’s Player of the Year Leigha Devine of Windsor, who plays for Rutgers. Devine went 73-71-68 to tie for eighth place.
