Still In The Mix

Despite missed cut in PGA Tour regular-season finale, Mark Hubbard joins Wyndham Clark as Colorado natives in FedExCup Playoffs; Hubbard will need good week in Memphis to qualify for BMW Championship at Castle Pines

By Gary Baines – 8/11/2024

Mark Hubbard didn’t finish the PGA Tour regular season the way he wanted — at the Wyndham Championship, he missed a cut for just the second time in 2024 — but the Denver native still made the FedExCup Playoffs for the second time in as many years since the number of postseason qualifiers was reduced to 70 starting last season.

And that means there’s still hope for him to qualify for the second playoff event of 2024, which will be held in the state where Hubbard grew up. But after finishing the regular season in 64th place in the FedExCup standings on Sunday, the Colorado Academy graduate will need a strong week in the playoff opener, Aug. 15-18 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, to be one of the top 50 players who advance to the BMW Championship that’s set for Aug. 22-25 at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock.

Hubbard will join fellow Colorado native Wyndham Clark in advancing to the playoffs. Clark, a Valor Christian graduate, sits fifth in the FedExCup standings following a regular season in which he picked up his third PGA Tour victory, at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. But Clark is essentially a lock to make it to the BMW Championship regardless how he performs in Memphis this coming week.

Meanwhile, as noted, Hubbard definitely has some work to do to compete at Castle Pines. In 22 starts so far in 2024, Hubbard has made 20 cuts and recorded two top-4 finishes: fourth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where Clark prevailed, and third at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event. Hubbard actually moved up a spot in the FedExCup standings this week (65th to 64th) despite his missed cut at the Wyndham Championship.

Hubbard, now 35, finished 67th in FedExCup points in the 2022-23 season. His career-best showing in the FedExCup standings was 44th in 2020. That year he competed in the BMW Championship for his first and only time, placing 51st.

Hubbard, by the way, last month at the Barracuda Championship surpassed the $10 million in career PGA Tour official earnings.

After 50 players compete at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines, the top 30 at the end of that week will advance to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta Aug. 29-Sept. 1.

The player bonus pool for the FedExCup Playoffs is a hefty $100 million, with the FedExCup champion earning $25 million.

Through the Wyndham Championship, joining Clark in the top five in the FedExCup standings were Scottie Scheffler (first), Xander Schauffele (second), Rory McIlroy (third) and Collin Morikawa (fourth).
