The Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship, which boasts a rich history as one of the country’s top elite-level amateur tournaments, will be held at Denver Country Club next July.
But in the meantime, Cal McCoy of Highlands Ranch had designs on giving the 2021 Trans-Miss plenty of Colorado flavor as well.
The University of Denver golfer, who finished fourth overall last August at the Rocky Mountain Open, hung around the top of the leaderboard all week in Independence, Minn., and ended up tying for seventh place out of a 144-man field on Friday.
McCoy, runner-up in the 2019 Canadian Men’s Amateur, went 69-66-74-72 at the Trans-Miss, finishing at 3-under-par 281, four strokes behind winner Derek Hitchner, a golfer from Pepperdine. For the week, McCoy posted 13 birdies and 10 bogeys.
In the last eight years, the Trans-Miss has produced winners such as Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris (twice) and Cameron Champ.
