Tough Draw

Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley get ‘Kim’-ed; Tom and Si Woo Kim make 9 better-ball birdies in 15 holes to defeat Americans at Presidents Cup; Clark will take 1-2 mark into Sunday singles

By Gary Baines – 9/28/2024

It’s been feast or famine for Denver native Wyndham Clark in his three matches so far at the Presidents Cup in Montreal.

In Thursday’s four-ball alongside Keegan Bradley, Clark never trailed in a 1-up victory over Taylor Pendrith and Christiaan Bezuidenhout from the International team. But in Friday’s 6-and-5 foursomes loss to Canadians Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes, Clark and Tony Finau never led.

And Saturday morning, in re-teaming with Bradley in a four-ball session, Clark again never led as the International pairing of Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim cruised to a 4-and-3 victory.

In other words, lead changes haven’t been a thing so far for Clark, the impending Colorado Golf Hall of Famer who is making his Presidents Cup debut this week.

With Clark not in the U.S. lineup for Saturday afternoon’s foursomes session, the Valor Christian graduate will take a 1-2 record into Sunday’s singles, which conclude the event. On Sunday, Clark will face Min Woo Lee in the eighth match, which starts at 11:31 a.m. (MT).

The U.S. holds an 11-7 lead over the Internationals heading into the final day.

Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim, a dynamic duo for the International side, proved a very formidable better-ball partnership on Saturday as they racked up nine better-ball birdies in 15 holes, most from the 10-20-foot range. The Americans, with five birdies, couldn’t keep pace.

“It’s nice to be able to make some putts for the team,” Tom Kim said. “Definitely there were a few moments where momentum definitely could have shifted, but we hung tight and did really well.”

After the Kim pairing birdied the first two holes to go 2 up, Clark helped keep his American team within reach with winning birdie putts of 29 feet on No. 5 and of 8 feet on No. 9. The latter left the Internationals 2 up after nine holes. But after Tom Kim drained an 11-foot birdie on 10 to put the Internationals 3 up, the Americans would get no closer the rest of the way.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s singles, NBC will televise the action from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
