U.S. Open Debut

Former AFA golfer Kyle Westmoreland the top local player after opening day of U.S. Open at Torrey Pines

By Gary Baines – 6/17/2021

Wyndham Clark and Kyle Westmoreland had to wait their entire lives to play in the U.S. Open, but their first round ever at the event will be split up over two days.

Clark, a Colorado native and Valor Christian High School grad, and Westmoreland, an Air Force Academy alum and former Broomfield resident, qualified within the last month for the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

But with late-afternoon starting times on Thursday — Clark teed it up at 4:50 p.m. (MT) and Westmoreland at 5:12 p.m. (MT) — they made it through just about two-thirds of their opening rounds before play was suspended for the day at 8:51 (MT).

Through 12 holes, Westmoreland was 1 over par and tied for 41st place, five strokes behind co-leaders Russell Henley (done with round) and Louis Oosthuizen (through 16 holes). Westmoreland has made a birdie and two bogeys so far.

Clark, a longtime PGA Tour regular, is 4 over through 13 holes, with no birdies and four bogeys on Thursday. He’s tied for 96th place.

Westmoreland and Clark will resume round 1 on Friday morning (7:50 MT) before a relatively quick turnaround for round 2.

Meanwhile, Denver-area resident Martin Laird did complete his first round, firing a 3-over-par 74 that put the former Colorado State University golfer in 78th place. Laird was in good shape through his first nine hole, standing at 2 under par after an eagle, a birdie and a bogey. But he struggled on his back nine (the front at Torrey Pines), carding three bogeys, a double bogey and no birdies.
