Coloradan Ben Lanting rallies to finish 13th in national Assistant PGA Professional Championship

By Gary Baines – 11/14/2021

Ben Lanting of Bear Creek Golf Club posted an under-par round for the third time this week and moved up to finish 13th out of 133 players in the national Assistant PGA Professional Championship, sponsored by National Car Rental, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Lanting, winner of three of the last four Colorado Assistant PGA Championships, shot a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday at PGA Golf Club and ended up at 2-under 286 total. He finished 12 strokes behind winner Jin Chung of Braselton, Ga., who earned $12,000 out of the $150,000 purse.

On Sunday, Lanting made three birdies and two bogeys. For the entire event, the 2021 Colorado PGA Professional Championship runner-up carded an eagle, 11 birdies, six bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey.

Andy Connell of The Ridge at Castle Pines North, who started the final round in 11th place after scores of 72-70-70, struggled on Sunday, recording a 6-over-par 78. He checked in at 2-over 290 — and in 37th place — after a final day that included one birdie, five bogeys and a double bogey.

Gunner Wiebe, the 2010 CGA Player of the Year, won the national championship last year but wasn’t defending his title as he left his job as a PGA assistant professional earlier this year.
